Who we are

Manor Development is a community based charity set up in 1992 to support local regeneration with an emphasis on creating the opportunities for people to work, train and gain experience locally.    This year Manor Development Company celebrates its 23rd anniversary and we believe its continuing success can be attributed to its flexible approach to local economic regeneration.

what-we-do

What we do

The company’s main activities focus on its business Centre (Alison Business Centre) a facility designed to provide premises for new (and) existing small businesses and sole traders.

purpose

Why We Do It

The stimulation and facilitation of local entrepreneurship and enterprise is seen as a key mechanism for tackling unemployment and economic decline in an area of significant deprivation, the Manor Estate in Sheffield. Our pioneering attitude and commitment has enabled us to adopt different approaches in order to achieve our goal and work towards an inclusive philosophy of Everyone Matters.

HOW WE SUPPORT THE LOCAL COMMUNITY

MDC has played a vital role locally within the areas local regeneration aims. MDC receives very little external funding to support its community involvement using surplus and facilities through Alison Centre in conjunction with established links with partners and the community as a beacon for community activity. It uses its links with the local community and local partners as a tool for communicating its aims and objectives around self employment as a viable choice for the local community and it encourages the community to pursue employment, training and volunteering options. MDC continues to support both local employment opportunities as well as much needed support services to the local vol/com sector.

TRAINING

Acting as facilitator through its core operations at Alison Business Centre and through its community facilities. MDC provides the necessary tools to ensure that accessible training opportunities are provided both to its small businesses and to the community in general.

HEALTH & WELLBEING

Combating isolation through social activities that work to reduce the isolation felt by many residents locally.  Supported targeted work that both combats isolation and ensures that the community can access the support and expertise needed.

VOLUNTEERING

Volunteering provides experience and opportunities to learn and reskill in new areas.  A vital part of local regeneration, Manor Development Company actively encourages local volunteers to become involved in all aspects of its operations.

CHILDREN & YOUNG PEOPLE

MDC continues to work very closely with its immediate neighbours to ensure a dedicated provision for children and young people.  Based at Angleton Meeting Rooms with activity provided mostly through MASKK, this dedicated resource was at risk of being lost to the community until MDC stepped in to ensure the survival of the much needed resource.  MDC continues to assist in the maintenance and upkeep of the building to ensure.

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES

MDC plays a vital role in encouraging the local community to pursue self-employment options wherever possible as a key mechanism for tackling unemployment and economic decline in an area of significant deprivation, the Manor Estate in Sheffield.  MDC has as one of its core aim the creation of employment opportunities for those within the community serves.  MDC encourage local employment either indirectly or directly through a variety of strategies.  Directly through a policy of employing locally whenever possible and indirectly through all those that it has links with.

COMMUNITY EVENTS

Providing resources through our dedicated Community Resource area to support a range of activities in conjunction with the local community.  Supporting the local community to organise and put on local events for all ages. Providing subsidised venue hire as well as a range of facilities to a variety of groups who work with the local community.

COMMUNITY PROJECTS

The main conduit for MDC activities Alison Business Centre is a well established business centre providing affordable, flexible provision to starter and small businesses. A trailblazing project that has acted as a beacon for similar operations not only in Sheffield but indeed nationwide.

CREDIT UNION

MDC recognises the need to ensure that individuals who are financially at risk need access to small sum loans and help with banking etc so it began operating as an outreach to ensure that even if someone only had a pound or two to save they could easily access  a way to save and that if they were in financial hardship there was a way to ensure that they could repay the amount borrowed.  MDC operates this facility through its premises at Alison Business Centre.
